The sequel to the 2000 blockbuster epic “Gladiator” is finally taking shape after two decades of anticipation. Ridley Scott, the legendary director behind the original, shared details about the creative process and challenges faced in the production of “Gladiator 2.”
Director Ridley Scott has revealed that he has already edited about 90 minutes of the Gladiator sequel. The film, which will not feature the return of Russell Crowe, was impacted by the writers’ strikes (already completed) and actors’ strikes (in progress).
The Long Wait
Why did the Gladiator sequel take so long to make? Scott revealed that the search for a compelling story was one of the main obstacles. In an interview with Total Film, he explained:
“We tried, actually, four years ago, and I chose a very good screenwriter who couldn’t understand the point of the new film. He struggled. He was terribly upset about not being able to deliver the story. He’s a friend of mine. I said, ‘ Aren’t you going to get there?’ And he said, ‘No.’ That process took about 10 months, then it went down the drain. And then we went back to the beginning, this time with a very obvious idea, and why not? There’s a survivor The survivor is the son of the union between Lucila and Máximo.”
Paul Mescal: The New Star
The choice of protagonist was also crucial. Paul Mescal, known for his performance in the miniseries “Normal People”, was cast in the lead role. Scott was deeply impressed by Mescal’s talent and felt an “obligation” to have him in the cast of “Gladiator 2.” He commented:
“Can I see Paul Mescal being as big as Russell Crowe? Absolutely. I watched Normal People. It’s not my kind of show, but I saw four episodes in a row – boom, boom, boom. I thought, ‘Who the hell is this Paul Mescal? ?’ And then I watched the whole series. And then, all of a sudden, Gladiator 2 came along, because the script was working really well. And I thought of Paul. And that was it.”
Return to the Colosseum
Filming for “Gladiator 2” took place in stunning locations, including the construction of a gigantic Colosseum in the Mediterranean Sea. Production was underway when it was halted by the SAG (Screen Actors Guild) strike, but now the script is completed and the sequel is ready to resume the epic journey.
The cast of Gladiator 2 also includes Barry Keoghan, Denzel Washington and Connie Nielsen, who played Lucilla in the original film. The production is expected to be released at the end of 2024 in theaters.
